Delaware MOMMAS (Mothers on a Mission in Activism)
& 1 Touch Ministries, Inc. are working together alongside Delaware State Trooper, Jamal Merrell (Read Below) with Out-of-the Box Initiatives to Begin to "Bridge the Gap" 1 Brick at a time. Good Afternoon MOMMA’s of Delaware.

For some time now, we wanted to work towards building a long lasting relationship with police officers, in our community, that could possibly bring forth programs that would directly benefit both our sons and daughters. We had to pleasure of meeting with officer Jamal Merrell on October 9, 2016, who is excited to bring these programs to fruition! In our meeting with Officer Merrell we discussed major issues that concerned us when it came to police interaction. 3 areas of concern were covered; Policing, Prevention and Protection. 
In areas of Policing, we discussed community policing and how pertinent it is to have police officers engaged in our communities and who are willing to build trust and longevity within those same communities. We also discussed the amount of training and justifications that go into everyday decisions police officers have to make during routine stops and escalated events. 
While it was good to hear the officers perspective we also stressed our main concern of making sure that our sons and daughters survive every encounter with police officers. Preventing fatal instances between police officers and our loved ones is probably our number 1 priority. In relation to Prevention we learned that, the first 30 seconds of your interaction with police officers is most important. In that 30 seconds officers determine what situation they are dealing with and how to carry out their job in that instance. 
As mothers we are always ready to protect our children and loved ones at all costs! So when we discussed our concerns around the topic of Protection we really wanted a clear understanding on what we can do to help our children stay protected when we are not around. Our questions involved issues like increasing trust between the community and police officers. How do we build that foundation? Officer Merrell insured us that sit downs, group discussions and community programs are great ways to build that relationship. Knowing the police in your area is a right that we all have. There are also police officers that want to be actively invested into the communities they are policing. 
We believe that though mentoring programs and other community outreach type services this can be achieved and all areas of concern will be met! Bridging the gap between the community and police officers can make a world of difference and can hopefully prevent any potential fatal shootings in our neighborhoods. Officer Jamal Merrell is ready to work with MOMMA of Delaware to make this happen for our youth and youth adults. Stay tuned for future updates!
